Magic has always existed in this world but it has taken many forms. In its raw state it it wild and unpredictable. Humans, in their ingenuity have found all sorts of ways to manipulate that magic field and this tends to differ from culture to culture. The only constant is that they are a manipulation of reality and they always come with some kind of equal and opposite cost. So some magic might take time from the caster or cause physical harm, other magic might suck life out of nearby nature.

> **Cairns/Shrines**
> Cairns and shrines were scattered all over Tameda. The bones of the deceased were kept here. While not directly used to cast spells or the like, a power still resided in these features that created a powerful field, especially on specific days, such as [[Ancestor Day]].
>
> **Time Mages**
> For the mages of early [[Tameda]], the cost was time. Once a spell was started the caster would be frozen into place until the spell's completion. For smaller spells, this could be just a few moments or hours. Some bigger spells might require months or years. It is not unknown for a mage to "run out of time" before the spell can be completed and become a stone statue.
>
> **Blermig Mages**
> Their magic had a physical cost. Casting spells resulted in physical injuries to the caster. This could be illness, broken bones or lacerations.
>

>
> **TechWiz**
> The source of the their power was a closely guarded secret, but they actually extracted the cost from nature. They built energy collectors that created a localized blight that grew the more they used. This led to the desolation that is not know as the [[Klatchfield Wastes]].
>
>**Vampire mages?**

>
> When it was destroyed, magic was made wild.
>
> The Ritual from Whispering Tree can create a new relic - in a world shattering event. It is meant to bind all of the world's magic to an object.
>
> The Miracle Box was made with a much smaller version of the ritual or maybe a piece of the relic?. The cost of the ritual was half of the population of Artiston and the desolation of the island.
>
